Nerja guide
The Río Chíllar river walk: what to know
A walk through the river itself, between high rock walls, starting on the edge of Nerja. One of the most original hikes in Andalucía. [Evelijne: one personal sentence]

In short
- A walk through a shallow river, with your feet in the water
- Starts on the edge of Nerja; the first part is a dry track
- The full walk to the narrow gorge and back takes 5–7 hours
- Turn around whenever you like: the first pools are lovely too
- Water shoes, a hat and plenty of water are a must
The route
From the edge of town you follow the riverbed inland. After a few kilometres on a dry track, the path goes into the water: usually ankle- to knee-deep, between steep rock walls. The highlight is the narrow gorge of Los Cahorros. [Evelijne: how far you usually go]
What to bring
- Shoes that can get wet and grip on stones (water shoes or old trainers)
- Quick-drying clothes, a hat and sun cream
- Plenty of water and a picnic: there are no facilities along the way
- A dry bag for your phone
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal. In summer, start early: the first part is hot and there is little shade until you reach the water. Do not go after heavy rain or when rain is forecast, as the water can rise quickly.
